INTERNAL FAMILY SYSTEMS (IFS)
AND THE 8 Cs

Internal Family systems

Internal Family Systems (IFS) is a powerful framework that views each person as composed of various protective and wounded inner parts, all guided by a central Self. It says that the mind’s multiplicity is natural and beneficial. Much like family members, these inner parts are pushed from their original, valuable states into extreme roles. The Self resides in everyone, remains indestructible, and possesses the innate wisdom to heal.

THE EIGHT C's OF IFS

  • Clarity
  • Calmness
  • Creativity
  • Confidence
  • Courage
  • Curiosity
  • Compassion
  • Connectedness

WHAT ARE THE 8 C's OF IFS?

The Eight Cs, based on the Internal Family Systems model, are confidence, calmness, creativity, clarity, curiosity, courage, compassion, and connectedness. These qualities can be applied to regulate thoughts, beliefs, and actions, leading to personal growth, healing, and transformation. For many people with ADHD, emotional deregulation, negativity bias, and rejection sensitivity can lower self-esteem and deepen social challenges. The Eight Cs teach those with ADHD to be centered and grounded in the face of stressful situations by showing the importance of being open and curious as opposed to reacting. Outcomes such as improving emotional regulation, overcoming procrastination, building resistance, improving relationships, and creating empowerment can be supported by incorporating the Eight Cs.

APPLYING THE EIGHT C's

Self-leadership helps improve emotional regulation by fostering self-awareness, self-compassion, and self-acceptance – supporting a more balanced emotional state. By developing qualities such as confidence, clarity, and courage, people can learn to overcome procrastination and take action of their lives. This model helps people develop resilience, which is essential for coping with the ups and downs of life. By fostering calmness, creativity, and connectedness, people can learn to navigate challenges more effectively and bounce back from setbacks. The Eight Cs can also have a positive impact on relationships, as they promote empathy, compassion, and effective communication.

By examining the interplay between thoughts, emotions, and actions, as well as harnessing these qualities, people can strengthen their connections with others and build supportive networks.

Improved relationships help people feel empowered and in control of their lives. The ultimate goal is to increase self-esteem, sense of purpose, and overall improved well-being of those with ADHD.
